5 Traits that you want your real estate agent to have

Buying or selling a home can be a long and stressful endeavor. There are many different issues and obstacles that can arise during the process. For these reasons, it is important to have a Realtor representing you that you can rely on to help make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible. Here are five traits that the real estate agent, whom you choose to represent you, should have.

  1. Integrity- This trait is a no brainer; honesty is always the best policy! You should want to choose an agent who is going to be honest with you and whom has morals. Buying or selling a home is a major decision for most people. You want the agent representing you to be honest with you throughout the entire process, regardless of if they think you will want to hear the news or not (I.E.- “The listing price you have set is way too high and a bit unrealistic” or “I’m sorry but they accepted another offer. Our offer was simply too low” etc.).
  2. Decisiveness- You want an agent whom is good at thinking on their feet. Time is often a factor in many things that we do in life. This seems to be especially true in the real estate world. While buying or selling a home is a major decision and deserves our full attention and allotted time; this just is not possible at times. Whether you have to pick up the kids from school or cannot get away from work during the process; time can often be an issue. This is why it is important for your real estate agent to be able to be decisive. If you only have time to see three houses in a day out of a potential 20 and have not had the time to pick which three you want to see; it is important to know that your agent is capable of picking the top three best options (based on your criteria) for you. The ability to be decisive is the ability to be effective. Your time, and your agent’s time, is valuable. It is important not to waste it!
  3. Dedication- Whether you are buying a home or selling a home; you want your real estate agent to be dedicated to the cause. Laziness (from your agent) should absolutely not be tolerated in any circumstance. You should have the peace of mind of knowing that your agent is working diligently to find you that dream home that you have always wanted: or to find a buyer for the house you are selling that will exceed, meet, or come close; to your asking price as quickly as possible. Hearing things from an agent such as “I don’t work on Mondays” or “I haven’t had a chance to get around to it” are clear signs that they will probably not be as dedicated to your real estate needs as they should be.
  4. Loyalty- It is quite simple: you want your real estate agent to be loyal to you and show professionalism at all times. It is important that you trust your real estate agent and that you are confident that they are loyal to you and not just out to make a “quick buck” by any means necessary. The last thing in the world you want to find out is that your agent helped sell your dream home to another buyer, which they also represented, because they simply came in with a last minute offer that put more money in that agents pocket; or that you missed out on a premium offer which would have paid you more on your house because your agent wanted to double-end (sell it to a buyer that they also represent) to make more money for themselves.
  5. Creativity- Whether it is not being approved by the bank for a loan, a buyer backing out at the last minute on a “done deal”, or one of the many other issues that can occur during the buying/selling process: obstacles constantly arise in real estate. Sometimes there is absolutely nothing your real estate agent can do, as some problems are completely out of their control. However, many times there are things that can be done. This is why it is important that your agent has the capability of getting creative in finding solutions to help you when these problems present themselves. When roadblocks occur that make it seem like you have hit a dead end; you want your Realtor to get creative and to think “outside the box” on what the next steps to take should be to help find a solution to the problem. A creative agent is an effective agent!
